5th Annual Lions Club Show & Shine Car Show
Belleville Lions Club annual show & shine car show draws 225 cars and smiles all around.
Begun 5 years ago as a celebration of the opening of the Lions Pavilion in Zwick’s Centennial Park in Belleville Ont. the car show has been doubly blessed, by strong support from the community and beautiful weather.
Initially the Lions Club Car Show committee was chaired by Doug Thompson. Richard Hanson took over the reins four years ago.
“We didn’t know what to expect at the first show,” said Richard Hanson. “We were blown away by the turn-out.”
The hard work of the Lions Club members, enthusiastic support of classic car owners and clubs, and the generous donations of prizes as well as services contribute to the ongoing success of the event. As well as dozens of door prizes handed out throughout the day and a 50/50 draw of $355, Japan Camera came out and provided photo cards for all entered cars.
The top awards at the show are the Mayors Choice Award and the Jim Parkhurst Memorial Award. The Mayors Choice Award is picked by the ballots from all the car owners. The choice of the Jim Parkhurst Memorial Award is always picked by a member of the Parkhurst family. This year that honour was bestowed upon Daniel Barker (16 years old), and though his mother (Sherry Barker) insisted that he carefully consider every entrants car, he went with his gut and picked the first car that had caught his eye as he entered the car show; Harold Wilson’s 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air.

Founder Melvin Jones, personal code was, “You can’t get very far until you start doing something for somebody else,” became a guiding principle for public-spirited people the world over. The Lions Clubs International was founded on June 7, 1917 in Chicago Illinois. Locally the Lions Club support many community charities as well as their Concerts on the Bay throughout the summer.
