Street Meet ’14-40th Anniversary Celebrations
The South Eastern Ontario Street Meet celebrated 40 years in Ameliasburg Ont. from August 6th to August 10th.
The Prince Edward Auto Club has hosted the annual event since it inception in 1975. Starting at the Hayloft on Salmon Point Rd. the three day event has drawn participants from Montreal, Ottawa and the northern states as well as many local classic car enthusiast.
This year the club official kicked things off two days early with a special Cruise Night at the Ameliasburg Community Centre. Quinte Access with their friends, the Drifters Car Club of Trenton came and joined in the event. Local radio celebrity, Freddy Vette, from CJBQ also made an appearance. Over $200 was raised in the 50/50 draw for Quinte Access.
Friday mornings at Street Meet are normal relatively quite, this year however was a completely different matter. Starting around 10:00 am. Members of the members of the Horseless Carriage Club (Ont.) and the Model T Ford Club stopped in for a light breakfast and a tour through the grounds. The Prince Edward County Fire Department had some of their equipment on display as well. By 5:00 pm. when registration had closed for the day over 140 vehicles had arrived.
Saturday began with a breakfast prepared by the club members, for all who were awake. Twenty-five day runners arrived to join in the festivities. The activities kicked-off at 10:30 am. with the crowd pleaser Potato Pick-up. The Rock 107 Lovely Ladies, Jenna and Brianna, tried their hands at the event. The team of Brianna and Andy Fletcher were the winners.
The average person thinks that classic cars are pampered. The Rod Balance events proves the opposite. Imagine putting your car on a giant teeter-totter for three minutes and trying to balance it. That is exactly what owners of cars of various vintages and styles do. Adam Turner of Picton Ont. achieved a total hang time of over 140 seconds.
The day ended with a roast beef diner cooked and served by the club with help from their many volunteers followed by a street dance, with The Reasons and fireworks provided by Mystical Distributing Co. Ltd.
Children have always been a major part of Street Meet. Events activities for the kids included face painting, bouncy castle, car judging, colouring and Valve Cover racing.
Sunday was another busy day , day runners began arriving at 9:00 am. a total of 35. A first for the Street Meet was the Dress as Your Cars era contest and Cut-for-a-Cure. Ken Lieghton of Brighton Ont. Went from hippy to redneck at the hands of Laura Poropat of Trenton Ont. to raise money for a cure for cancer.
The weekend finished with the presentation of awards and Sean and Jim Benvie at the gate with Fill-the-Fifity-Five for the Prince Edward County Food Bank.
